4 out of 5 stars Great except Perfect Pixel   June 24, 2009
N. Wells (TN)
It's a very good looking T.V. I definitely see a better picture compared to my old 1080i. However every movie or show I watch also looks like it was shot with a crappy camera. It's an effect that was very hard to put my finger on. It was like I was watching movies that were unnaturally sharp and made the movies look fake.

Then I played around with the 'demo' feature. It turns out Perfect Pixel was causing the effect, the demo offers a side by side view with Perfect Pixel on and off. [...]

When I look at faces I see every pore on their face, then I see big white dots on their necks. when I took off Perfect Pixel (only available on left 50% of screen during demo) the neck looks like a neck again. Also some shirts would cause terrible white glare from no where.

I was going to hit this T.V. hard, but it looks like Perfect Pixel can be turned off in a way. There's no off button per se, but it does seem to work off the Sharpness setting. I think Perfect Pixel feeds off this number (0-10), I turned it down low, very low. Looks like a movie again.

Still 4/5 for the terrible quality of the Perfect Pixel feature, but then it's better than any olden day sharpness effect I guess.

i just bought the philips 42pfl5704d/f7 which is almost identical to this model. both have 1080p, 120hz, 2m/s response etc... i am just writting this review because you can get that tv for so much cheaper at dell. when all was said and done (by using a few online coupons) my total amount including tax, was only $773. just throwing it out there for those who are interested in this tv. i have not yet received the tv but i hope its good and judging by the reviews i think it would be

5 out of 5 stars AppleTV and the Philips 42PFL7403D/F7 -Amazing   April 18, 2009

IF you value your productivity, do not purchase the Philips 42PFL7403D/F7 42 in LCD with an aPpleTV- the combination is like 'crack' for videophiles and will keep you glued to the set without recourse!

I bought this lovely Philips through tigerdirect.com, the EXACT company who you will buy this through via Amazon. I have dealt with them for years and their product values are solid. The Yellow truck shipping was $99, the nice manager (rare in urban areas) called to set up a delivery time convenient to me, and the nice driver (even better) helped me move the unit and unpack it properly.

OPEN YOUR BOX IMMEDIATELY upon receiving it before signing the slip. The driver noted a few big screen LCD's with gashes on the screen that could only be noted upon careful inspection. Pluggin the unit in isn't as important as you can deal with the company later (tigerdirect's phone support has been mediocre-average in my past experience).

The Philips 42 LCD with 120Hz refresh, HD at 1080p, and a 2mS (very fast) response time with 3 adjustable picture settings (color, contrast for dark vs. light blacktones, and sharpness) ROCKS. Very sharp, colors are warm without bleeding. Dynamic range is very good.

My upconverting toshiba xde dvd player produced wonderfully rendered imax movies (ie, galapagos) which made me sigh "aaaah" like the first time i turned on my larger LG 50 plasma.

Unlike the philips MRI units and computers i have worked with, The remote IS intuitive, color coded buttons appear on the screen matching the remote 'function key like' and my mom might even be able to operate this!

The sound is fine - the 'surround' option sort of works, and importantly does not distort sound like other surround receivers if there is not a 5:1 or 6:1 speaker arrangement. don't expect subwoofer lows, or wall shattering power output.

AppleTV has recently been upgrade with 720p HD content, the movie rentals last 30 days for $3, and the content is amazing between itunes / podcasts/ tv episodes (notably the movie selection remains subpar for purchase titles).

AppleTV did produce a few odd loud "clicks" on the LCD when the hdmi input was selected from another...can't figure out why, but only happened 2-3 times. Oh, and you would be crazy to not use HDMI - just buy cheap cables on amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat price performance   February 23, 2009

I did not buy this product from Amazon, but from Sam's Club during Black Friday. They had it for sale at 799.00. I looked at all 42" LCD TVs they had for sale from all the big stores and found this one which was cheap at the time. I figured you can't go wrong with a Phillips and the pricing was at least $100 less than the any other model except they did have a JVC for the same price. I decided to go with the Phillips because of better past experiences with Phillip products. I do not regret it one bit. The picture is very clear when watching Blu-ray. My ps3 games also look awesome. The best thing is that I have a 5.1 logitech surround sound system from my pc which only has 70 Watts and cost me $50, but when I connected it to my TV, my movies come to life! I can make my two-story house rumble and I don't even need to turn it all the way up. When I have friends over, they think I have an expensive surround sound system and I just laugh.

5 out of 5 stars best bang for buck!   February 22, 2009

I got this about a month ago and couldn't be happier. You really can't beat the free shipping offer from Amazon. Mine got here within 5 days and delivered right to my living room, unpacked, and inspected. This was really a good buy. None of the LCD cons' against plasmas seem to hold for this one:

1. The blacks are as dark as the screen when powered off
2. There is no blur... seriously NONE
3. Factory color settings are superb
4. Half the power consumption of comparable plasma screen
5. 120 Hz refresh and 2ms pixel response not available in any other model for this price
6. Really good sound from internal speakers

Bottom line: This is the best under $1.5K 42-inch LCD you can get.

Recommendations: Disable the "Digital Natural Motion" when watching 1080p (bluray) as it makes high-contrast lines flicker. This is a non-issue with DVDs, and probably not really needed for bluray.
